Anne B. Elliot wrote today (https://3.basecamp.com/4983193/buckets/20858411/messages/3700597864#__recording_3701333329), "PS I noticed another problem with basecamp. I'm really missing post numbers that I could refer to posts by." I agree. I've been referring to posts by linking the whole message thread and then sometimes giving the date of the individual post. But it would be nice to have a way to specify an individual post better.
doubtingthomas I haven't explored basecamp fully. If there is any feature I am missing, please tell.
doubtingthomas I find basecamp lacks managing tools. Making a message board for every discussion topic will increase the number of message boards very fast. It will make it harder to find stuff and same conversations might get copied
doubtingthomas I am gonna start another conversation. I am opening more nodes than I can comfortably handle. I know I am gonna overload my manager and do inefficient work. I also risk letting my autopilot take over. But my immediate situation demands this (as best as I know) so I am gonna start another conversation.
Elliot basecamp or curi are both fine
doubtingthomas did you mean curi blog forum?
doubtingthomas i posted
doubtingthomas Adding a few more thoughts. 10 more max would be my guess.
doubtingthomas 2 mins
doubtingthomas ok
Elliot move to a forum thread?
doubtingthomas that includes pings and this chatroom
doubtingthomas quoting doesn't work properly in chats
doubtingthomas They are my close relatives. And they care about me.
Elliot why do you care about ppl you think are hopeless?
doubtingthomas
> I was trying to find the curi blog article on how children's rationality is broken by parents but couldn't. Can anyone help?

I was actually remembering this (link below) message. Are there any blog posts which discuss this in more detail?

https://discord.com/channels/304082867384745994/659937634369404968/705499635774521434
doubtingthomas How do guys deal with the fact that a lot of people you care about are hopeless? They are destined to make a lot of mistakes because of being bad at reason and irrationality. I can kind of see that those mistakes are about to happen. I don't know what I can do to help. I myself need help first. I need to work on myself first.
doubtingthomas I was trying to find the curi blog article on how children's rationality is broken by parents but couldn't. Can anyone help?
doubtingthomas
shouldn't this message board
https://3.basecamp.com/4983193/buckets/20858411/messages/3473893122#__recording_3532775731
be a part of the documents? There's a document titled 'learning to do projects'. I think this should be a part of that
doubtingthomas You can check out cs50. I like their production.
Justin M. 🙂
Elliot
Justin M. ya
Elliot rly minimal
Elliot quicktime does recording but idk if it's a good idea to use that
Justin M. we need Apple Screen or something
Justin M. not for me :(
Justin M.
Justin M. meh
Justin M.
Justin M. i think they have a free trial
Justin M. haven't looked into it much, just heard of it as being similar to screenflow
Elliot tech issues
Elliot https://www.blogmarketingacademy.com/camtasia-vs-screenflow-review/ this says windows camtasia is a hassle
Elliot any special features?
Elliot what's good about camtasia?
Elliot i could just record with obs. idk
Justin M. i am curious if camtasia is better but it's pretty expensive
Justin M. i haven't had the best experience with screenflow
Elliot twice when trying to export vid to YT. wtf :(
Elliot
internet sometimes when i try to show the steps in a project, im not sure if i should include some certain steps, but i dont ask anyone about it and i dont mention it so no one can help me! it seems like it would be good if i just tried to do some steps i was specifically unsure about and ask if i should have those steps or not
Justin M. i've intentionally written some meta comments about getting unstuck and problem solving methodology in my simply scheme blog posts. but the content is a bit scattered. i'm trying to collect it in two trees (and add some more stuff) so that it's more organized
Anne B. It looks like Documents show up in Activity too, even if you don't get a notification for them.
Justin M. 👍
Elliot Documents default to notify no one, btw. but you can select everyone b4 u post it
doubtingthomas
> btw I was referring to notifications in "Hey!"

I know. I think you only get notifications in that section for things you are subscribed for.
Anne B. Ah. I like getting them all in email. That way I can save things that I want to reply to or think about in my inbox.
Justin M. for email i just get digest + pings
Anne B. Ok.
Justin M. btw I was referring to notifications in "Hey!"
Anne B. Yeah.
doubtingthomas so you won't get notification I guess
doubtingthomas none of you guys are subscribedd
doubtingthomas
Anne B. Ah yes, those are showing up for me if I go to Activity. I guess I should get in the habit of checking Activity too. I had just been going by the email notifications.
Justin M. saw original forward in Activity, i mean
Justin M. did not see notification for original forward. Did see notification for replies to forward. Also saw it in list of Activity
Anne B. I have my notifications set to get notified of everything. But I'm not getting them for forwarded emails. Are you getting them, Justin, using the desktop app?
Elliot i wrote 6630 words of articles today. exhausted.
Elliot i've been using mac and ios apps since near the start. web is fine but i prefer the apps.
Justin M. Desktop app experience is going well. I'm also trying out the iOS app some.
Justin M. I just installed the Basecamp Mac desktop app. I expect I will like this more than using a browser window. I tend to prefer using desktop apps.
Anne B. I watched the curi video about Zooming Trees In and Out. My response was to think: Yes! I want to do that tree project in the video! But I think it would be bad for me to abandon the project I'm doing in order to start a new one. I'll add the Zooming Trees project to my list of ideas for the future.
fouxdefafa i like mayonnaise
internet ive had some problems making sandwiches cuz they were to big and hard to eat without stuff spilling out. i think i should make some easier sandwiches with less ingredients, less mustard, less mayonnaise. that way less stuff spills out
Elliot I don’t see any way to bump or pin forum posts so new ppl find intros topic
Anne B. I think I should have started a new message thread for the discussion about project plans in general, as opposed to the discussion about a plan for back exercises. Is it feasible/advisable to move some of the posts to a new thread?
Elliot i'll post most on sources of organization in a few days. keep thinking and talking about it more and you'll get more out of my followup.
Alisa Z. I posted "Daily project spreadsheet" to https://curi.us/comments/show/20007
Max K. I think that's b/c it's in chat. it doesn't work like that in the msg board.
Max K. > Formatting didn't come out right on that. When I tried to add in paragraph breaks it posted.
Elliot It’d be best on message board. Black line is quoting.
Anne B. I posted a new exercise answer to my new website: https://aelanteno.github.io/sicp-exercises/exercise-2.42 . As before, I'd like feedback on website/formatting and on whether my content is clear.
Anne B.
Here are my three questions/problems with line breaks, for easier reading:

I have a hard time breaking a goal down into a planned-out tree made of smaller things that are easy wins. Example:I have a goal of understanding computers and learning how to use them better. Breaking that down into a plan of all the small things I want to learn and in what order seems too hard. Instead I take opportunities to learn small things when they come up.

Are you saying we should aim for mastery in everything we do? If not, how do we decide which things to go for mastery in? If yes, that seems like too much—wouldn’t we sometimes want to just try something out to see how it goes and whether we like it?

Having criticisms be uncommon isn’t a very good gauge. Criticisms could be uncommon because there’s not much to criticize or they could be uncommon for other reasons (maybe there’s so much wrong that people don’t know where to start in their criticisms, maybe people are busy with other stuff, maybe people are afraid you won’t take criticism well, maybe people don’t like to criticize because it’s not nice, maybe your stuff is boring so no one reads it).
Anne B. And I don't know why there's a black line down the left side of it.
Anne B. Formatting didn't come out right on that. When I tried to add in paragraph breaks it posted.
Anne B.
Not sure where to put this. Trying it here.

Elliot wrote in yesterday’s Fallible Ideas newsletter:

>> The same goes for all your other philosophical work. Keep it simpler. Practice things. Aim for mastery. Aim for a low error rate where correct criticisms are uncommon, surprising and treasured.
>>
>> Consider what you do have mastery of and build on it. Plan out projects intentionally with goals and trees, keeping issues like mastery and overreaching in mind.

[…]

>> Start way smaller, get quick, clear wins, and iterate. Start with multiple successful (micro) projects per day. Finish 100+ in a month with a not-decisive-clear-success rate under 10%. Establish a baseline of what you can do that way and get the iteration started.

Reply to this email or post at curi.us or Basecamp and let me know what problems you have with this advice. What are the downsides you see? What do you dislike about it? What makes you hesitate or feel bad about it? What’s confusing about it for you? Then I’ll suggest solutions to the problems people raise.

Some of my questions/problems with this:

Elliot Ah u can delete but not permanently. Move to trash thing but I can restore. https://3.basecamp-help.com/article/75-permissions
Anne B. I made a test to-do list.
Anne B. It looks like I can make new to-do lists and new automatic check-in questions. It also looks like I can edit the group name and description and even delete the group.
Elliot or make new automatic check-in questions?
Elliot can y'all make new todo lists? not sure how permissions work
