Dface Learning Plan

Hi Dface Dface , let's start with some questions. You don't have to answer. Skip or give less detail for whichever you want. (Note for other people: I already know some stuff so this isn't just a generic set of intro questions.)

Country?

Age? I don't care exactly. I'm guessing early 20s. If you were 30 or 40 I'd need to change my mental model of you.

What did you study in college and how far did you get before quitting? Why'd you quit?

What FI related books have you read?

How'd you find FI and why'd you get involved?

Do you know much about CR, Oism, TOC, or Austrian economics? Do some of those interest you more or less?

Do you want to be an expert philosopher 10 years from now? Do you want to one day make money doing philosophy? Or do you just wanna learn some useful stuff to improve your life and help you do other stuff better?

Oh and do you know much about any uniquely FI topics already like YesNo, Paths Forward, or overreaching? Do some of those interest you more or less?
Dface
Country?
 Im from the US
Age?
Yeah early 20s

What did you study in college and how far did you get before quitting? Why'd you quit?
I was studying for a biology major. I was 4 years in.

I didn't feel like I was actually learning. I hate the professors and the grade system there. I don't think it reflects actual learning and effort put into the class so I quit.

What FI related books have you read?
I read all of BOI and FOR and the first part of Atlas Shrugged.

I thought I understood what it said, but I learned there's so much going in the background of these books that I had to miss like 90% of what was said.

How'd you find FI and why'd you get involved?

Lot of parts in BOI didn't make sense to me so I kept looking for sources that made it easier. I couldn't find any really until I read on the acknowledgements that you had a lot to do with the book.

Do you know much about CR, Oism, TOC, or Austrian economics? Do some of those interest you more or less?
I don't know much of any I just can repeat what I read in a bad way. At first CR interested me the most, but then Oism sounded more interesting. Now I like how more approachable FI is.

Do you want to be an expert philosopher 10 years from now? Do you want to one day make money doing philosophy? Or do you just wanna learn some useful stuff to improve your life and help you do other stuff better?
I don't know for sure. If I'm good at it and I like it then hell yes.

Making money off that sounds cool.

I want to take lessons from FI to improve my life, but I also want to contribute anything if I get far enough.

I don't know much about any of the FI topics, but Yes/No interests me the most.

what was the goal? be a doctor? scientist?

are you in a bunch of debt now from student loans?

do you read much? have you read many books in your life? is it easy or hard for you to read a book if the ideas in the book aren't very hard, like reading a sci-fi novel?

do you think you have a reasonable understanding of how you spend your time? and much control over how you use your time? or no?
Elliot, Fallible Ideas
are you decent at math or pretty bad? were there any school subjects you were especially good or bad at?
Dface
what was the goal? be a doctor? scientist?
Be a scientist. It was a big goal

are you in a bunch of debt now from student loans?
No loans Im free of them

do you read much? have you read many books in your life? is it easy or hard for you to read a book if the ideas in the book aren't very hard, like reading a sci-fi novel?
I haven't read much lately just some articles. It's difficult to read an easy book cuz I read slow and I have to read several times sometimes

do you think you have a reasonable understanding of how you spend your time? and much control over how you use your time? or no?

Yes 50% work 45% video games and 5% FI learning.

If I want to do a big project that isnt gaming then I usually fail and not have much control.
Elliot, Fallible Ideas
Yes 50% work 45% video games and 5% FI learning.

why not more time on FI?

It's difficult to read an easy book cuz I read slow and I have to read several times sometimes

maybe reading more books would be a good thing for you to work on. you could try some fun books like Heinlein novels to replace some video game time. you can learn some stuff without reading many books, but enjoying reading and being good at it is basically a necessary part of being a great philosopher.

Be a scientist. It was a big goal

do you know anything about anti-aging research and SENS? i think that stuff is rly important. and u already did some study related to it. have you read the book Ending Aging? maybe that'd be good to look into if you haven't and see if it inspires you. not sure how hard for you it'd be. it's written for the public not scientists but has a fair amount of biology stuff in it (i didn't understand everything). i'm not really sure how you get involved with that field or get hired tho. i don't know what degrees they require for what, what different paths exist to get involved, how many ppl get rejected from these kinda jobs, etc.

PS it'd be easier to read if you used the quote formatting for the stuff i said. there's a button next to the two T's.
Dface
Im on phone is it the same way to quote?
Dface
Oh I don't see that sadly. I'll use my computer instead for further typing. Can I edit my past messages to include quoting?
Elliot, Fallible Ideas
you can edit past messages. i see the button on my phone below the comment box instead of above and i have to scroll the buttons sideways a little cuz they don't all fit on screen at once. i have the iOS basecamp app on my phone. try getting the app if u didn't yet.
Dface
Im using desktop version on my phone. Android basecamp has only Bold, italics, bullet points, and attachments. Idk why
Elliot, Fallible Ideas
by desktop version do you mean web? they have desktop apps at least for mac, which i have, but i don't think that'd work on a phone. or maybe it does with windows or android stuff? idk.

on the website on my mac i'm seeing the quote button.

if you need, you could use bold for quotes and it'd look decent.
Dface
Yes I just went on my browser and I went basecamp there
Dface
Im about to go to work I'll be back sorry
Elliot, Fallible Ideas
no need to apologize. you can respond to stuff when it's a good time for you. (that's one of the things that's easier with a forum instead of a chatroom.)
Dface
Ok
Dface
why not more time on FI?
Im not very good at learning FI by myself so I get stuck and go back to playing video games.
you can learn some stuff without reading many books, but enjoying reading and being good at it is basically a necessary part of being a great philosopher.
Ok that sounds good. I would like to be good at something besides just video games.
do you know anything about anti-aging research and SENS?
Yes, I actually wanted to research anti aging. the chem labs at college were hard though. Students are put in multi step labs with almost no guidance. It was annoying. I felt like a cave man trying to break open a nut but never getting to it.

I remember one of your streams where you read an SENS paper. Working there doesn't seem so promising

Elliot, Fallible Ideas
ok so i'd suggest working on project planning practice stuff more here and trying to read some books. look for books you might enjoy, not hard books, and switch books if you don't like it. if you're not sure what kinda books to start with, search for "Heinlein" at https://www.elliottemple.com/essays/reading and try him. if that's too hard we could come up with something else but maybe it'll work for you.

for posting here, if you get stuck say something about what you're getting stuck on and why and ask for help.

sound good?
Elliot, Fallible Ideas
audio books or using text to speech is fine if you prefer. it's good to learn to read text books at some point but it doesn't have to be first.
Dface
Yes, that sounds good.

Should I be concerned about tracking anything when I read? Like finishing a certain amount of pages
Elliot, Fallible Ideas
maybe write down what day you start, stop or finish a book. you can track more if you want to.
Dface
Ok for sure
Elliot, Fallible Ideas
Oh yeah big tip. Recent books are risky. Too many are awful. General rule of thumb is read books from the 1900’s, especially after WWII.
Dface
Ok
Dface
Should I be concerned about how fast I read? I don't know if I should try to speed read or not. I get like <10% comprehension if I do. Im reading Starship Troopers
Elliot, Fallible Ideas
No worries about going fast. Maybe later.
Dface
Ok cool

I don't understand the approximate date range of books that is being recommended here. In particular, I don't understand how the text ", especially after WWII" affects the meaning of the final sentence. Does anyone think that it might be helpful for me to analyze that sentence grammatically?

Elliot, Fallible Ideas
ya try analyzing. ppl should be able to read that paragraph easily.
Alisa Zinov’yevna Rosenbaum
I thought about the final sentence some more. I haven’t analyzed it grammatically, but I found an interpretation that I don’t have any criticisms of. I think it recommends books that were written during the years 1900-1999, and it especially recommends books written during the years 1946 (approx.)-1999.
Elliot, Fallible Ideas
That’s correct. I’d still suggest grammar analysis and post mortem. Some autopilot of yours has an error.
Alisa Zinov’yevna Rosenbaum
General rule of thumb is read books from the 1900’s, especially after WWII.

This sentence has the form: General rule of thumb is X. I will first analyze the X text as if it were a stand-alone sentence. Then I will analyze the entire sentence.

Sentence #1: Read books from the 1900’s, especially after WWII.

1. Verb: "Read" (infinitive, imperative mood)

2. Subject: you (implied)

3. Object: "books"

4. Modifiers:

  •  "from the 1900’s". This text modifies "books". It answers the question, "What kind of books?"
  •  "especially after WWII". This text modifies "books from the 1900's". It answers the question, "What period within the 1900s is emphasized?"
Conclusions: It is requested, recommended, or commanded that books from the 1900s be read. Emphasis is given to books from the 1900s that are from after WWII.

Sentence #2: General rule of thumb is read books from the 1900’s, especially after WWII.

The intro text "General rule of thumb is ..." indicates that the text which follows is a recommendation.

Conclusions: It is recommended that books from the 1900s be read. Emphasis is given to books from the 1900s that are from after WWII.
Alisa Zinov’yevna Rosenbaum
There's also the additional meaning that the recommendation is a general rule of thumb.
