> Gene name errors are widespread in the scientific literature

> The spreadsheet software Microsoft Excel, when used with default settings, is known to convert gene names to dates and floating-point numbers. A programmatic scan of leading genomics journals reveals that approximately one-fifth of papers with supplementary Excel gene lists contain erroneous gene name conversions.

Lots of scientists shouldn't be scientists. They aren't assimilated to scientific culture. They don't have scientific attitudes. They're just half-assing it and social climbing in a career like any other. But science *isn't* a career like any other. Science requires creativity, initiative, integrity, etc. Regular people can be much more productive doing other jobs, and are often counter-productive in science.
